Ten Pieces – Mussorgsky’s Night on Bare Mountain
This month we are listening to a famous piece of classical music called ‘Night on Bare Mountain’ written by Modest Mussorgsky in 1867.
Night on the Bare Mountain is an example of a tone poem which is a short piece of orchestral music written to tell a story, mood or idea. As you listen to the music, try to imagine the mountain. How would you describe the mountain? What kind of place does it sound like? What about the music makes you think the mountain would be like that? Who might you find on such a mountain? Can you tell from the music what they might be doing there?
