This half term, Year 5 have been learning to use Garage Band with Mr Taylor, our Musician In Residence.
They went on to record sounds around the school which they edited together to create a soundscape of Drake. This is the soundscape they created:

As part of our work on Diversity, we have been thinking both about our own identities, as well as identity of our school. Year 5 worked together to create a poem about Drake set to their soundscape.

This month, our Year 4 Choir were due to travel to Birmingham to sing at the Music for Youth’s Summer Festival. Unfortunately, the event had to go digital, so they recorded their contribution from school and it was shared as part of an online event.

July 2021 – Music Mark
We are honoured to have been nominated by Norfolk Music Hub to be a Music Mark School in recognition of our commitment to providing high-quality music education for all pupils at Drake.

This week, pupils and families from across the country were invited to take part in the Norfolk Music Hub’s Virtual Big Sing 2021.
Every class in the school tuned in on Thursday to watch the live, interactive concert. The event was led by choral director Mark De-Lisser, who is the vocal coach behind The Masked Singer and also featured as vocal coach and mentor for the Children In Need ‘Got it Covered’ charity album. Mark was assisted by some high-profile celebrity singers – including Professor Green, Gabrielle,Aston Merrygold from JLS, Becky Hill, MNEK, TikTok star RED, Kirsten Joy (Clean Bandit), Nathan Evans and Marisha Wallace. We were particularly excited to see one of the musician’s performing on the saxophone was our Musician In Residence – Mr Taylor!

Lovely to see the Reception children freely exploring musical notation that they have seen in our Singing Assemblies.
May 2021- Bucket Beats
Year 5 have been learning to play ‘Bucket Beats’ with virtual lessons from the Norfolk Music Hub. In June we’ll be joining in live as part of Make Music Day.
April 2021 – The Biggest Sing
In June, we’ll be joining Young Voices, Billy Ocean, YolanDa Brown and Ruti singing live to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for ‘Largest Simultaneous Sing’. We are also learning to sign the chorus. Here are Year 3 practising.
April 2021 – clubs
This week we launched a new set of music clubs.
First up were the Year 5s with their new ukulele club with Mr Draycott.
This term we also have choir, a string ensemble, a musical technology club and a staff ukulele club.

We are all missing having our Musicians in Residence in school, but we got to see a little bit of Mr Taylor this week when he made a video to teach our Reception children all about how his instruments make sound.

January 2021 – Virtual Drake KS2 choir
This week our virtual KS2 choir was launched. We had songs to practise during the week which were shared on our choir google classroom then we got together on zoom for a practice on Friday lunchtime. It’s a new experience for us all, but it was great to get together and sing – even if it was virtually. We are rehearsing for virtual performances of Senwa Dedende and Great Day.

January 2021 – Firebird
Last year, the Norfolk Music Hub offered students of all abilities across Norfolk the opportunity to work on an ensemble extravaganza of the Firebird and asked them to submit a video or audio recording of their part. Our Year 4 classes worked with our Musician in Residence, Mrs Carruthers, to learn the glockenspiel part. Watch out for them in the finished piece.

We may be closed for now, but that doesn’t stop the music at Drake.

We are kicking of our year by getting ready for the Biggest Sing.
The Biggest Sing, which will take place during Children’s Mental Health Week in February, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for ‘Largest Simultaneous Sing’. Thousands of children and their teachers across the country will join in singing the classic Bill Withers song ‘Lovely Day’ along with Billy Ocean, YolanDa Brown and Ruti. The new version of the song will also be released as a charity single in support of Place2Be.

Norfolk Music Hub, in partnership with The Come and Sing Company, St George’s Theatre, Sheringham Little Theatre and NYMAZ put on Rapunzel The Lockdown Pantomime for schools across the country. All month we have been learning the songs then, as an end of year celebration, we got to join in with the live streamed performance. The children were very excited to see one of our Musician In Residences, Mr Taylor, appear with his saxophone!

December 2020 – Christmas preparations
Usually at this time of year we are busy coming together as a school community to prepare for Christmas and our performances. This year it has all been a bit different, but we are still rehearsing and get ready for digital performances instead.
Our Year 3’s started learning the trumpets this term and they have been getting into the Christmas spirit with Jingle Bells.

Everyone else’s performances have been filmed ready for our digital concert.

Our Year 4s have been hard at work learning to play the glockenspiel part with our Musician In Residence. We can’t wait to see the full performance once it is completed.

October 2020 - music clubs
This month has seen the launch of our KS2 music clubs run by our Music Team. Our teachers are working hard to make these clubs work within the strict Covid guidelines we have in place. We want our pupils to experience as many fun and exciting musical opportunities as possible, while keeping our school community safe.
We are excited to see so many of pupils participating already and they all had a fantastic time. So far we have 4 lunchtime clubs and 2 afterschool clubs running including Samba, Ukulele, choirs, woodwind club and a Digital Music club. We look forward to seeing our clubs grow and develop as the year goes on.

September 2020 - and we're back!
Back to school in Covid times has been interesting, but thanks to the support from the Norfolk Music Hub, we have been able to get stuck straight back into music again. We have robust safety measures in place to keep everyone safe and the children are taking it all in their stride.
This year we have a team of 4 musicians working for us, and already we have had Samba taster sessions, music wellbeing lessons, woodwind demonstrations, instrument lessons and more! It has been fantastic to hear music drifting through our corridors again.
Just to add to the musical excitement, our music room has had a makeover and is looking fantastic:
Year 2 enjoyed some glockenspiel taster sessions from Mrs Carruthers. Next they'll be having some recorder sessions with Mr Draycott.
Year 5 loved their Samba taster session with Mr Taylor. Their lunchtime Samba club starts next week!
