Music to listen to

We all know that reading and talking about books is crucial to your development as a writer. The same is true for music. If you want to be rounded musician and a discerning listener and to appreciate the value of all music types, then you need to listen to as wide and varied a diet of music as possible.
At Drake, we listen to a diverse range of music throughout the week from different
musical genres, cultures and time periods. Some of these we’ll share here so you can listen again, as well as other pieces of music connected to our learning for the week.
Ten Pieces

At Drake we focus as a school on a piece of classical music each month through the BBC’s Ten Pieces.
We listen to it, watch musicians playing it, learn about the composer and the period of music it was written in, respond in different ways and share together in enjoying the music.

Our Ten Pieces for this year are:

September – A Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams

October – Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven

November – Storm Interlude by Britten

December –Symphony by Ravi Shankar

January - Symphony No. 1 in E minor by Florence Price

February - Mars by Holst

March – Connect It by Anna Meredith

April – Horn Concerto by Mozart

May – A Night on Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky

June – Overture by Grażyna Bacewicz
July - Enigma Variations by Elgar
