On Thursday 3rd of October, Year 5 had a visit from local reverend Tony Haywood. He shared with us some of his beliefs about death and explained the process of a Christian funeral and his role is supporting those mourning. It provided a great insight into our current RE unit for Christian beliefs about death and provides an interesting comparison with the beliefs about death that the ancient Egyptians held.
Thajnk you to everyone who came to our reading cafe today. We hope you found the session helpful to supporting your child’s reading. We explored the importance of ready, reading diaries and some great free resources to use. The PowerPoint from the session follows here.
Some great examples of work from Tereshkova class, shown through our studies of ‘Life and Death’. Some work taken from our geography work studying Egypt’s location and some write ups from our school trip
On Tuesday 24th September, Y5 had the pleasure of visiting Cambridge where they were able to visit 2 different museums. The Fitzwilliam museum helped the children with their studies of Ancient Egypt through the children becoming detectives, studying interesting artefacts to understand their use in history. They also had some self led time to explore the Egypt section of the museum to study sarcophagus paintings, items to take to the after life and some interesting pieces used in everyday life. The children were also able to visit the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences to look into some fossils. The fossil handling session allowed the children to explore some fossils and categorise them into body fossils, trace fossils and fake fossils. The children even looked into the remains of a hippopotamus that was found in Cambridge many years ago.
This week, both Y5 classes has their first music session. The children are learning to play the Ukulele and Mr Bell demonstrated his musical abilities which the children enjoyed listening to. The children played a game which included repeating patterns which was enjoyed by all.
Today, the children explored the concept of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. We created a physical place value grid where the children moved between columns depending on the operation given. It’s fair to say this method was well welcomed by the children who thoroughly enjoyed this maths lesson
In English, we have started to learn our new text clock close. We have started to use drama to secure this learning, creating freeze frames and short action scenes to act this out. The children also enjoyed hot seating each other, questioning our key character Billy.
Please see Tereshkova class’s story map and performance of their model text ‘Clock Close’ here: Video Centre
Place value bingo was well enjoyed by the children. The children would choose 4 four digit numbers and then cross them off depending on the criteria given e.g. cross out your number if there is a 2 in the tens column. It got very competitive. Well done Spencer who won both games in Tereshkova class.
While exploring the concept of ‘Who were the Ancient Egyptians’ this week, one child in class had a big idea that we need to share. They asked “How come the River Nile doesn’t dry up? It’s so hot in Egypt and water evaporates in the heat so how does it have any water left in it?”. This big idea has gone up onto our working wall and the children can add their thoughts as we move through the unit.
Our multiplication focus for this half term term has been learning all about square numbers. The children explored with cubes making, what they thought, were square numbers before digging into what they like and how they are solved. The children completed some arithmetic and reasoning style questions based on this.
This week was values day. We thought about our school value ‘Kindness’. We considered what kindness meant, how we could be kind but also what unkindest is and how that makes others feel. We considered if everyone can be kind all of the time and this prompted some interesting discussion. The children made kindness postcards for people close to them.
What a great first day back to school, to start the new year! The children had a brilliant first day back, exploring the woodland, playing with friends and creating art. A fun day had by all.
