Year 5 welcomed some visitors from the John Innes Centre, as part of British Science Week. Year 5 took part in Science, Art, Writing (SAW) workshops, about antibiotic discovery. The practical sessions included growing useful bacteria from soil, looking at bacteria under microscopes and separating colours from skittles using chromatography. The children also met the scientist’s leafcutter ants!
The science was followed by a creative session led by a professional writer and artist- Year 5 wrote science themed poems and created oil pastel leaves based on the science they learnt in the morning. Our thanks go to Jenni Rant from the SAW Trust for organising the day and Barrie Wilkinson's lab (John Innes Centre) for funding the workshops.
The theme for British Science Week 2025 was 'Adapt and Change.' Children learnt what climate change is and explored what we think and how we feel about climate change. Every class wrote a climate change pledge- a little action we can make, to reduce the impacts of climate change.
