WB 6th July

This week we will be listening to stories about the seaside. We will be thinking about what we would like to do during at day at the seaside. We will be learning about staying safe in the sun and making posters and we will even have a go at making our own ice cream! In Maths this week we will be exploring and measuring capacity and comparing the capacity of different containers.

We are continuing with our daily handwriting and this week the letters we are practising are v, y, w, z and x. The practice sheets for these can be found at the bottom of this page:
https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

Below is our timetable of suggested activities for this week. We’ll be posting these each day on Tapestry and you might like to upload how you get on with the activities.

Monday

Reading:

*Daily speed sounds

*Play ‘Picnic on Pluto’ on Phonics Play. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/picnic-on-pluto

Can you read each word and decide if it’s a real word or a nonsense word?

Writing:

*Daily handwriting practice: v

Down a wing, up a wing.

*Watch this programme about Barnaby Bear visiting the seaside. What did he do on his trip? What things did he see?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qO0mu6YJW8

What would you take if you were going to visit the seaside? Can you draw some pictures and write a list?

Maths:

*Daily counting to 20 and back.

*This week we are exploring capacity in Maths. Hunt for a selection of containers of different shapes and sizes and explore filling them with materials such as sand, water, rice, lentils, beads, bricks. Talk about what the containers are like and begin to think about which one holds the most/least etc.

Also:

*Can you make your own miniature beach scene in a box? I wonder what you could use to make the sand and the sea? Can you add other things that you might find at the beach?

Tuesday

Reading:

*Daily speed sounds

*Listen to the story ‘Lucy and Tom at the Seaside’ by Shirley Hughes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAzz_vMO1I8

What did Lucy and Tom enjoy doing at the seaside?

Writing:

*Daily handwriting practice: y

Down a horn, up a horn and down under his head.

*Imagine you were going to the seaside for the day. How would you travel there? What would you do when you got there. Can you make a story map to show what your day at the seaside would include? You could use pictures and labels. I have done one that you can see on Tapestry.

Maths:

*Daily counting to 20 and back.

*Continue to explore capacity using different containers. Choose a container. Can you make your container full? empty? nearly full? nearly empty? half full? Can you find containers that hold more and less than your container?

Also:

*Think about the different creatures that live under the sea. Can you choose one and find out 3 facts about it?

Wednesday

Reading:

*Daily speed sounds

*Listen to the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’ by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h46WN31pIRk

Talk about what happened in the story. What did you like about it?

Writing:

*Daily handwriting practice: w

Down up, down up.

*Can you use your story map to write about your day at the seaside?

Maths:

*Daily counting to 20 and back.

*Investigate which of your containers holds the most, how will you prove it? You could pour from one container to another or you could use a small cup to fill each container, counting how many cups each container holds. Can you find a way of drawing and writing what you have found out? You could draw each container and write down how many cups it held.

Also:

*Perhaps you could have a go at making your own ice cream! There are lots of healthy, home-made ice cream recipes here you could try:

https://www.kidspot.com.au/kitchen/recipes/fruity-gelato/fkktodw9

Here is a recipe for a traditional creamy vanilla ice cream:

We’d love to hear how you get on!

*Today you will need a cup or a bowl and a selection of spoons - you might be able to find a teaspoon, ladle, wooden spoon and a serving spoon! Can you investigate how many teaspoons it takes to fill your container, how many large spoons, how many ladles? Which size spoon was the best? Why? Can you draw and write what you found out?

Also:

*You might like to listen to some poems about the seaside. There are some lovely ones in the ‘Seaside Poems’ book, collected by Jill Bennett:
